Biological Durability
Per EN 350, Thermo-D holds a biological durability class and delivers long-lasting performance in exterior applications.

No. 01What is Thermowood?

A natural process that gives wood a new lifetime — using only heat and steam.
Thermowood is wood modified at 190–212°C in an oxygen-free environment with steam. The process patented by Finland's VTT Technical Research Centre permanently changes the wood's cell structure: hemicellulose breaks down, hydroxyl groups are removed, lignin caramelizes. The result: 50–90% less moisture movement, 25–30 year outdoor service life, deep caramel color — without a single chemical.
Two classes serve different needs: Thermo-S (190°C) for indoor stability, Thermo-D (212°C) for outdoor durability.
No. 02The Process
ThermoWood® is a registered process by the International ThermoWood Association (ITWA), licensed and audited. Every batch produced at Novawood follows VTT-Finland specifications, with parameters logged from each kiln cycle.
The kiln is rapidly heated up to 100°C. The temperature is then gradually raised to 130°C. During this process the wood is dried and its moisture content reduced to zero.
Inside the wood, the temperature is raised with steam to 180°C (Thermo S) and 212°C (Thermo D). Once the target temperature is reached, it is held for 2–3 hours.
In the final stage, a water-spray system lowers the wood temperature to 80°C – 90°C and continues until the wood's moisture reaches 4–6%.
